Understanding Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)

Liberty Naturals uses stabilized hypochlorous acid formulations; each product has its own intended use and label directions. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) can be produced through a controlled electrochemical process using prepared water and salt. This page explains the underlying chemistry, production variables, formulation controls, packaging and storage considerations.

How HOCl Is Produced

Modern hypochlorous acid solutions are typically produced by passing an electric current through a carefully prepared saltwater solution. This process, often called electrolysis or electrochemical activation, can generate a mixture of chlorine-based species. The goal of a well-controlled process is to favour the formation of HOCl within a defined pH and available chlorine range, while minimizing unwanted by-products.

Key variables in production include:
• Water quality and purity
• Salt quality and concentration
• Cell design and operating conditions
• Temperature and residence time

Because these variables interact, consistent HOCl production requires careful monitoring and process control.

Why Formulation Matters

pH Control

pH is one of the variables used to characterize an HOCl formulation and monitor consistency.

Available Chlorine

Available chlorine is measured as part of formulation characterization and batch-to-batch monitoring.

Purity & Control

Input quality and electrochemical process controls help support consistent formulation parameters.

Packaging & Storage

Packaging and storage conditions are selected with consideration for light, temperature and air exposure.

How the Chemistry Works

HOCl is a chemical species whose behaviour depends on factors such as pH, concentration, water quality and storage conditions. Production and packaging choices are used to monitor and manage formulation consistency over time.

Light, temperature and air exposure can influence an HOCl formulation over time. Follow each product’s storage directions and labelled intended use.

Short summaries below link to original papers. These studies examined specific experimental conditions or other formulations; they did not test Liberty Naturals products. Liberty Max, Liberty Derma and Acceleryn are distinct formulations.

HOCl chemistry and immune defence · 1981

Albrich and colleagues examined reactions between HOCl and biological materials under laboratory conditions relevant to immune-cell activity. This is mechanistic research, not a clinical test of a consumer product.

A small human wound-model study · 2022

Burian and colleagues compared a specific stabilized HOCl formulation with saline in 20 healthy volunteers using a controlled blister-wound model. The study measured skin repair and bacterial counts. Its findings cannot establish results for different formulations, chronic wounds or animal care.

Why formulation and pH matter

Mehendale and colleagues (2023) explain the terminology and chemistry of HOCl and hypochlorite, including how pH influences the species present in a solution.
